Roof damage to a home that needs to be fixed.

When your roof leaks, it can create major damage to your home that requires costly repairs. The sooner you spot and deal with roof issues, the easier it is to fix them. Save time, money, and hassles by proactively inspecting your home interior and exterior so you’re aware of your roof’s condition.

Read on to learn the signs that your roof is causing damage to your house.

How to Know Your Home Is Being Damaged by Water Infiltration from a Leaky Roof

1. Are there water stains on the ceiling of your highest floor’s rooms?

If there is discoloration on your ceilings, you have a roof leak. Peeling, cracked or bubbling paint is also a sign your roof is leaking. While the leak may be a slow one, it’s important to contact a reputable contractor to have your roof inspected.

2. Can you spot daylight inside your attic?

One of the quickest ways to check for roof leaks is to go into your attic and look for any daylight peering through its ceiling. When water seeps into your attic through a compromised roof, your insulation will become moist and moldy, and over time your attic’s wood beams may rot.

3. Are there asphalt shingle granules in your gutters and downspouts?

When it rains, if you spot a pile of asphalt roofing granules just outside your downspout, your roof shingles are getting older and moisture intrusion could result in your attic and home interior. When asphalt granules come off roof shingles, bald spots form on your roof that make your home vulnerable to leaks.

4. Do you have missing shingles on your roof?

Each roof component has a vital function in protecting your home from the elements 24/7. And your roof shingles are the first line of defense against the weather. So when shingles go missing due to being blown off from high winds or a storm, it’s important to have your roof inspected promptly to avoid roof leaks.

5. Has mold invaded your home due to a roof leak?

When moisture makes its way past your roofing and into your home, if you aren’t aware of it, mold can develop. And mold can start growing as fast as 48 hours. If you see or smell mold growth inside your home, contact a reputable roofing contractor and have your roof inspected.

6. Are your gutters and downspouts malfunctioning?

Gutters may be small, but they have a big job—they channel water away from your home. When gutters or downspouts get clogged, rain and melting snow may work their way into your roofing system because they have nowhere else to go. You can avoid this problem by cleaning your gutters a couple of times a year, and keeping them in good working order.

7. Do your shingles look curled?

Every spring, fall, and after major storms, grab some binoculars and go across the street from your home to take a good look at your roof. If you see something other than a consistent pattern of shingles, you may have a roof leak. Anything out of the ordinary—like curling or buckling shingles—means your roof should be inspected by a contractor for damage.

8. When it rains, do you hear (or see!) water dripping?

If you grab a bucket and put it in the same place to capture dripping water every time it rains, you obviously have a roof leak. Hearing or seeing water dripping in your attic or any other place in your home when it rains is evidence of a leak that needs to be fixed fast.
